![]() ![]() Moving between Hana in 1943 and Emi as an elderly woman today, White Chrysanthemum sheds light on a devastating history - and how the bond of sisterhood is strong enough to endure the evils of war. ![]() Saving her sister, Hana herself is captured and forced to become a "comfort woman" in a Japanese military brothel. One day Hana sees a Japanese soldier heading for where Emi is guarding the day's catch on the beach. This is the story of Hana and her little sister Emi, who are part of an island community of haenyo, women who make their living from free diving off the southernmost tip of Korea. In 2002 Bracht visited her mother's childhood village, and it was during this trip she first learned of the ‘Comfort Women’ captured and set up in brothels for the Japanese military. She grew up in a large ex-pat community of women who came of age in post-war South Korea. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck, University of London. Mary Lynn Bracht is an American author of Korean descent who now lives in London. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We don’t witness Shy’s nervousness, his fear that he will not be able to go through with what’s ahead of him. Shy briefly removes his backpack at one point on his journey and feels the relief, “omething that was hurting for a long time briefly not hurting.” That’s Shy’s hope on his journey out of Last Chance: to find a relief that’s not so temporary.Īs the night progresses and Shy makes his way to the lake, though, it’s not the harm he plans for himself that fills the troubling and troubled pages of Porter’s novel. Porter doesn’t provide much in the way of context, isolating the reader with Shy in the moment-he is, simply, leaving. Instead, Shy wishes for his last chance to have been taken he wants it to be over, to be past. When we meet Shy, though, rehabilitation is far from his mind. His fourth novel, named after its eponymous subject and published earlier this spring, features the troubled Shy at Last Chance, the rather haunted home in the English countryside whose aim is to rehabilitate young boys like himself. There’s a singular compassion at the center of Max Porter’s work. ![]() His backpack is filled with rocks, and he’s headed for the lake. IT’S THE MIDDLE of the night, and Shy is sneaking out of Last Chance. ![]() ![]() ![]() It was listed among the 100 greatest picture books by the New York Public Library. Publishers Weekly described Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me as "a wondrous work of art that will stand up to countless readings". The story also tackles concepts of wish-fulfillment and imagination. The book introduces children to the lunar phases, showing the Moon "shrinking" and "growing" in the sky every night. As the nights go by, she watches the Moon gradually reappear in the sky, going from waxing crescent to full Moon. The Moon agrees to shrink, becoming a waning crescent, and Monica plays with it until it shrinks so small that it vanishes. ![]() He gets a ladder and, placing it atop a huge mountain, ascends to the Moon only to discover it is too big to carry down. She cannot reach it and asks her father to bring it to her. Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me tells the story of Monica, a young girl who dreams of playing with the Moon. The book's aim is to educate children about the phases of the Moon. Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me uses a distinctive collage style, typical of Carle's work by 1986, achieved by painting tissue paper, cutting it into pieces, and assembling it. As with Carle's earlier title The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), merchandise has been based on this story and it has been adapted to animation. It tells the story of a young girl, Monica, who wants to play with the Moon. ![]() Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me is a children's picture book designed, illustrated, and written by Eric Carle, published by Simon & Schuster in 1986. ![]() ![]() ![]() I am so grateful for the words that I needed to hear at exactly the right time in my life. I kept reading, not only because I loved the story and the characters, but because I felt like I would find the answers to what I needed to do in Cathy’s journey. So much of my own life problems I was watching unfold in Cathy’s journey that I started questioning myself “DID MIA KNOW THAT I NEEDED THIS BOOK RIGHT AT THIS VERY MOMENT? DID SHE WRITE IT FOR ME?” I know it is very unlikely but this is EXTREMELY HITTING CLOSE TO HOME. It was just this book I think I was DESTINED to read as most of the things happening in my life was kind of mirroring where the main character was at in ways. It took me by the shoulders and shook me as I watched Cathy find herself. A R S E N.Īrsen made things truly different for me. Books that caused me to think about things thoroughly and pushed me to finally take action and change something. But I’ve only had a handful of books that I could say actually changed my life in a tangible way. In my reading life I’ve had an abundance of reading experiences where I’ve felt extremely moved and that something in me has shifted. ![]() Authors in no way officially endorsed the use of images, clips and music in the video. ![]() Warning: This video contains scenes that may spoil the plot, viewer discretion is advised.
